Watch as a photographer rescues a puppy from the ruins of the McKinney Fire in California.
YREKA, Calif. – A photographer capturing the aftermath of California’s McKinney Fire rescued a puppy found living in the ashen ruins of a home during the weekend.
Jonathan Rivas, of AIO Filmz, said he came across the dog Saturday near the town of Klamath River in Siskiyou County. Rivas said the pup appeared to be standing watch over the home that had been destroyed by the massive wildfire that has burned more than 55,000 acres in Northern California since it started Friday.

In the video, the tail-wagging dog appeared very happy to see Rivas. The pup was clearly very thirsty, quickly lapping up a bowl of water once in the safety of Rivas’ vehicle.
'Patches' the puppy rescued from McKinney Fire reunited with owner
Executive Director of Rescue Ranch John Golay discusses providing shelter to close to 160 evacuee dogs who escaped the McKinney Fire. Golay notes that through Facebook, the owner of Patches was able to reclaim his dog.
Rivas said he took the dog to the Rescue Ranch in Yreka, about 30 miles from where it was found. In a Facebook post, workers at the shelter said they had received nearly 140 dogs in less than two days.
Two people have died in the McKinney Fire, which is the largest wildfire in California this year.
