Coastal communities along the East Coast have been battered by the ongoing nor’easter from North Carolina to New England, with some of the worst impacts unfolding on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks.
As of 7 p.m. Saturday, Dare County had declared a state of emergency for Hatteras Island because of the loss of access along N.C. Highway 12.
N.C. Highway 12 has suffered severe damage from the nor’easter, prompting officials to declare a state of emergency on Hatteras Island.
The vital coastal roadway has been severely damaged by relentless ocean overwash, while North Carolina Department of Transportation crews work to make immediate repairs and strengthen the road against additional storm impacts.
NCDOT continues to assess damage the N.C. Highway 12 at Pea Island.
If conditions allow, crews plan to begin constructing a temporary roadway Sunday, Sept. 27.
There is currently no timeline for when road access will be restored. Until then, there is no road access to or from Hatteras Island.
The declaration allows Dare County to impose access and reentry restrictions and take other measures necessary to protect public health and safety while N.C. Highway 12 remains closed on Hatteras Island between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe.
The declaration states that visitors and nonresident property owners are not permitted to enter the island at this time.
Officials are working to establish emergency ferry service to transport stranded individuals off Hatteras Island.
Hatteras Island has remained in the national spotlight as accelerated coastal erosion has claimed more than 20 oceanfront homes in Buxton and Rodanthe, as the nor’easter continues to batter the already vulnerable coastline.

Strong winds are sweeping across Long Island as the nor’easter continues to batter the region.
The strongest gust reached 55 mph at JFK International Airport, followed by 48 mph in Westhampton Beach, 47 mph in Montauk, 44 mph in Farmingdale and 41 mph in Islip.

East Hampton recorded a 35-mph gust, while sustained winds across Long Island ranged from 22 to 30 mph.
The powerful winds could down trees and power lines, creating additional hazards and potentially causing more power outages across the region.
Long Island is among the areas facing some of the storm’s worst conditions as the low-pressure center tracks north toward the region, with damaging winds, coastal flooding and heavy rain expected.
The powerful nor’easter is leaving thousands of customers without power across the Northeast as strong winds bring down trees and power lines.
According to data from PowerOutage.com, New York had the most reported outages, with over 27,000 customers without power.

Connecticut followed with over 17,000 outages, while New Jersey had over 16,000 customers without electricity.
Massachusetts reported more than 8,200 outages, with another 6,500 customers without power in Rhode Island.
Strong nor’easter winds are knocking down trees and power lines, leaving thousands without electricity across the Northeast.
The outages add up to nearly 70,000 customers without electricity across the five states as the nor’easter continues to bring damaging winds and coastal flooding to the region.
More outages are possible as the storm’s strongest winds continue.
A 56-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn, New York, as a powerful nor’easter battered the East Coast.
The New York Police Department confirmed the man was struck by a tree near 700 Euclid Avenue around 3:30 p.m.
He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m., police said.
The death marks the first reported fatality linked to the nor’easter, as strong winds continue to impact New York City and the Northeast.

The full moon is putting an extra boost behind the nor’easter’s coastal flooding threat.
During a full moon, the Sun’s and Moon’s gravitational pulls work together, creating what are known as spring tides.

That means higher-than-normal high tides and lower-than-normal low tides — not because the Moon is “raising” only the high tide, but because it increases the overall tidal range.
Today’s full Harvest Moon peaked at 12:49 p.m. EDT, with the enhanced tidal cycle continuing as coastal communities experience successive high tides.
The massive nor'easter's strong northeast winds are pushing water toward the coast, while waves and surge can pile additional water on top of an already elevated high tide.

The storm may not appear as intense away from the coast, but powerful wind gusts remain a threat inland.
Amid coastal flooding along the Jersey Shore, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office deployed a specialized hovercraft on Long Beach Island to navigate water-covered roads and other flooded areas.

The Neoteric rescue craft rides on a cushion of air, allowing it to travel across shallow water, mud, sand and debris. A hovercraft forces air beneath the vehicle, creating a cushion that lifts it slightly above the surface.
A rear propeller moves the craft forward, while rudders help steer it. Unlike a traditional boat or truck, the hovercraft does not rely on wheels or a deep hull, making it useful in areas where conventional rescue vehicles could become stuck.
Along the Jersey Shore, the nor’easter is allowing the hovercraft to showcase its unique capabilities as coastal flooding continues to impact low-lying communities.

The Neptune Township Special Operations Team responded to several weather-related incidents, including a tree that fell into a home.
Coastal flooding has briefly eased from the south shore of Long Island to the Outer Banks after low tide passed earlier this afternoon.
Water levels are now rising toward the next high tide, which is expected between roughly 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. ET.
Conditions are likely to worsen as the tide comes in, bringing more intense flooding and dangerous coastal impacts.
The Long Island Sound and coastal Massachusetts are still approaching low tide, with high tide expected between roughly 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. ET.

The most severe conditions in those areas are expected later tonight as water levels rise again.
The first Flash Flood Warning of the nor’easter has been issued for parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island as heavy rain moves across southeastern New England.

The warning includes southeastern Bristol and south-central Plymouth counties in Massachusetts, along with Newport County in Rhode Island.
Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with rainfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour expected. An additional 1–3 inches of rain is possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
The Wind Advisory along the coast of eastern Connecticut and Long Island has been upgraded to a High Wind Warning.
Northeast winds of 25–35 mph, with damaging gusts up to 65 mph, are expected Saturday night into early Sunday as the storm tracks west just south of Long Island.

The warning covers parts of New London and Middlesex counties in Connecticut, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York.
The powerful winds could bring down trees and power lines, potentially causing additional outages and prolonging existing power disruptions.

Massachusetts' highest wind report of the day so far was a 70 mph gust on Cape Cod.
A powerful nor’easter is already taking a toll along the Jersey Shore, where homes have flooded and roads have become impassable in Ocean City, New Jersey.

The flooding comes as the Jersey Shore braces for even higher water, with additional coastal flooding expected as the nor’easter continues to batter the East Coast.

Power outages are mounting due to a major nor'easter that is slamming the East Coast, with even more detrimental impacts expected through the weekend.
After a morning filled with flooding for many on the coastline, nearly 150,000 people are without power, with New York alone reporting nearly 30,000 outages, according to poweroutage.us.
Connecticut isn't too far behind, with roughly 23,000 homes without power. New Jersey has about 20,000 power outages, too.
Saturday morning's high tide brought flash flooding to Point Pleasant, New Jersey.
Photos show the worst of the flooding. The next high tide is expected around 8 p.m. tonight. The FOX Forecast Center said conditions will be similar to this morning, if not a little better.
The winds ahead of the dangerous nor'easter storm that is raging up the East Coast have made it to New England.
