LIVE: Snow falling at 1-2 inches per hour as winter storm impacts Northeast
A storm system is currently moving through the Northeast after dumping heavy snow across the mid-South on Thursday. Most accumulations along the Interstate 95 corridor will range from 3 to 8 inches, but locally higher amounts are possible in portions of New England.

The first winter storm of 2022 is disrupting flight activity across the U.S. Friday and impacting commuters along the I-95 corridor.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for coastal Washington County in Downeast Maine until 1 a.m. Eastern time Saturday morning because of the combination of gusty winds and heavy snowfall.
This is the first Blizzard Warning anywhere in Maine since March 13, 2018, nearly four years ago.

FOX Weather expects areas around the nation's capital to see between 1 and 3 inches of snow. Most of the snow will fall before sunrise.
Because of the winter weather, many groups and organizations have canceled activities on Friday including DC Public Schools.
Most areas in and around New York City are expected to see 3 - 5 inches of snow. Forecast models show that the frozen precipitation will taper off around noon for the city.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams says the storm response team will meet at 4 a.m. to determine which areas will be hit hardest by the winter storm.
All New York City Public Schools will be closed on Friday because of the weather.
Kentucky state office buildings will be closed on Friday because of the winter storm. Single-digit temperatures are expected overnight for some part of the Bluegrass State.

Some of the heaviest snow associated with the system fell south of the Lexington area. Harrodsburg, Kentucky reported seeing 9 inches of snow.

The University of Kentucky in Lexington reported more than 6 inches of snow as of Thursday afternoon.
The campus closed at 3 p.m. and has not posted when they will reopen: campus link
The Clark County Sheriff's Office reports I-64 was shut down near Mt. Sterling, Kentucky after a crash involving dozens of vehicles blocked the interstate. Since the crash, one lane of I-64 eastbound has reopened but all westbound lanes remain closed.
Crews are working to remove semi-trailer trucks involved in the crash. Authorities estimate it could be around 9 p.m. EST before additional parts of the highway reopen.
Snow is expected to start during the early morning hours of Friday for Boston and continue through the lunch hour.
Meteorologists expect the frozen precipitation to fall between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST.
Forecast models show accumulations of 6-8" of snow with locally higher amounts.
Travel along major interstates in parts of Kentucky was brought to a standstill at times due to the heavy snow. Authorities ask people not to travel on roadways in southern and central Kentucky unless necessary.
Nashville reported breaking its daily snowfall record for January 6. As of 5 p.m. CDT, the city reported 6.3 inches of snow, and the city still had a chance of seeing additional light accumulations.
The old snowfall record for the date was 4.0 inches set back in 1977.

A Winter Storm Warning means: hazardous winter weather is occurring or is imminent. The National Weather Service definition of hazardous weather varies by office but the agency generally defines hazardous winter weather as: 5 inches or more of snow/sleet within a 12-hour period or 7 inches or more of snow/sleet within a 24-hour period.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear deployed National Guard members to help motorists stranded on roadways.
Parts of the state have seen more than half a foot of snow with additional accumulation on the way.
MassDOT expects to deploy 2,500 snow removal and treatment vehicles for the winter storm.
All non-emergency state employees have been asked to stay home on Friday to help keep roads clear for snow removal.

Areas of west-central Kentucky have picked up more than 6 inches of snow by 3 p.m. with 8 inches in Tonieville.
A low-pressure system that is forecast to dump several inches of snow from the mid-South to the Northeast will likely go on to become the year’s first “bomb cyclone” for North America as it moves through coastal Canada .
While the name sounds scary, the term “bomb cyclone” is simply used by meteorologists to describe a non-tropical low-pressure system that undergoes rapid strengthening. That process, which is called “bombogenesis.” In order for a system to be considered a “bomb cyclone,” the central atmospheric pressure has to drop 24 millibars within 24 hours.
With the storm bring snow across the eastern U.S. this week, computer models agree that it will undergo bombogenesis between Friday morning and Saturday morning. It will be moving through the Canadian Maritimes during this timeframe.
Forecasters have said there will be widespread areas of 3 to 5 inches of snow from the mid-South through the mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England through Friday. There will also be areas of 5 to 8 inches in the Appalachians and parts of New England. Isolated areas of nearly a foot of snow are possible in higher elevations.

A winter storm warning goes into effect at 3 p.m. until 10 a.m. Friday. Snowfall between 1 and 2 inches per hour is possible.

More than 4 inches of snow has fallen in Nashville by noon and it's still coming down. This marks the city's snowiest day since January 22, 2016 when Nashville received 8 inches.
By noon, Buffalo had already broken its daily snowfall record for Jan. 6, with 13.1 inches so far at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. The previous record for the date was 7.3 inches set in 1974.

The Department of Sanitation New York has issued a Snow Alert for New York City beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern time Thursday evening, warning of up to 6 inches of snow overnight into Friday morning.
In a Snow Alert, DSNY coordinates with New York City Emergency Management and the Department of Transportation on snow clearing protocol in accordance with each agency’s written snow plan. All relevant city agencies have been notified of the Snow Alert.
