Clipper system dives through Northeast bringing dangerous snow squalls, high winds

While some areas like Boston are seeing lighter snow or flurries on Wednesday morning, a brief break is expected in the afternoon before another wave of snow pushes through, impacting areas along the Interstate 95 corridor and New York's Hudson Valley.

BOSTON – A fast-moving storm system is rapidly moving through the Northeast, bringing a combination of snow, wind and the risk of snow squalls, particularly across the interior and portions of New England.

A few inches of snow is likely from Michigan to Maine. More than a foot of snow will fall in the typical lake-effect areas of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario in New York. This will be due to the initiation of lake-effect snow after the clipper passes by, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Watertown, New York, is getting hammered by snow, with 9 inches already piling up and another 5-10 inches possible. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect there until 1 a.m. Thursday.

Strong winds gusting up to 45 mph will make travel treacherous. Watertown has already received over 60 inches of snow this winter, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Wednesday's commute is expected to be extremely difficult, especially where Winter Storm Warnings are in effect east and southeast of Lake Ontario in central New York.

The best chance for these dangerous squalls will be across northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and into northern New England. The squalls have the potential to produce sudden whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 45 mph.

Close to the I-95 corridor from New York City southward, it'll simply be too warm for dangerous squalls with temperatures on either side of 40 degrees. So while flakes may still fall, they are not expected to have much of an impact on area roads.
