A dog and its human companions are safe Thursday after a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft rescued the stranded Sanibel residents after Ian devastated Southwest Florida.

Sanibel Island was cut off from Florida's mainland after the Category 4 hurricane destroyed the causeway.

A U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin aircrew found the two and the dog while searching the island.

All the storm victims were airlifted to safety back on the mainland.

Mayor Holly Smith said in a press conference Thursday evening that rescue efforts continue to be underway as 200 households chose not to evacuate.

"Today, the most important thing we had to focus on were the people that were on the island that needed to get off. That was our number one priority." Mayor Smith.

The Coast Guard has made multiple rescues, including the 12 people who were found injured on Sanibel Island.
