Severe storms, including an observed tornado, moved through Maryland Tuesday evening, causing damage just miles outside of Washington D.C.
The National Weather Service says the tornado was observed in Bowie, about 15 miles outside the nation’s capital. A storm survey team later found damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado that was on the ground for three minutes along a mile-long trek. Peak winds were estimated at 90 mph.
The tornado was the first in Prince George's County since Sept. 29, 2015. Since 1950, 25 tornadoes have been reported in the county.
Another tornado was also seen in Shady Side, according to the NWS.

Videos from the area showed snapped trees and damaged homes but according to officials they have yet to find anyone who was injured by the storms.
"I can’t say that I have seen something like this," Bowie Mayor Tim Adams said in a press conference. "We have had a couple in years past or tornadoes touching but nothing quite like this."
The hardest hit area appeared to be Bowie, Maryland but PowerOutage.US reported less than 1,000 outages in the region.
"The most important thing is that we don’t have any real injuries to life," Adams said.
