Invest 90L fizzles over the Southeast but serves as a reminder Atlantic hurricane season begins next week

The low-pressure system, which was situated in the north-central Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, moved inland over the southeastern U.S. on Monday morning before fizzling out by Monday afternoon

The National Hurricane Center began issuing outlooks Sunday for an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico that had a very short window to develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm, but that window has now ended and tropical development is not expected over the next five days.

This system was dubbed Invest 90L by the NHC and was the first invest the NHC had monitored in the Atlantic tropics this season.

An invest is simply a naming convention used to identify areas the NHC is investigating for possible development into a tropical depression or tropical storm within the next five days.

WHAT IS AN INVEST?

The low-pressure system, which was situated in the north-central Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, moved inland over the southeastern U.S. on Monday morning before fizzling out by Monday afternoon.

The latest outlook from the NHC shows no areas of interest in the Atlantic tropics over the next five days.

However, the system will produce showers and thunderstorms, along with gusty winds, across portions of the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama on Monday. This activity is expected to spread northeastward across other parts of the southeastern U.S. over the next day or two.
