Restoration efforts underway after nor'easter dumps more than 3 feet of snow in parts of Northeast

The snow and rain began falling on Monday, with the highest snow accumulations occurring on Tuesday. Some areas saw as much as 3 feet of snow in the highest elevations of Massachusetts, Vermont and New York.

A powerful nor’easter that slammed the Northeast with heavy snow, high winds and torrential rain is finally starting to pull away from the East Coast, but the winter storm’s effects will linger on Wednesday as crews continue working to restore power and remove snow and ice from roadways.

The snow and rain began falling on Monday, with the highest snow accumulations occurring on Tuesday. Some areas saw as much as 3 feet of snow in the highest elevations of Massachusetts, Vermont and New York.

Current power outages

The combination of the heavy, wet snow and the strong winds downed trees and power lines throughout the region, leading to more than 300,000 outages and the closure of Interstate 93 in New Hampshire.

The high winds also caused a tree to fall onto a child in Derry, New Hampshire, but first responders said the child only had minor injuries.

Utility crews have been busy working to restore power since the storm’s onslaught. Despite their hard work, more than 200,000 power outages remain as of Wednesday morning.

Winds are expected to remain gusty in the region, which may lead to more power outages.

Top snow totals

Several areas across the Northeast picked up at least 3 feet of snow, including Palenville, Stony Creek and Moriah in eastern New York state. Marlboro in Vermont and Colrain in Massachusetts also picked up 3 feet of snow from the nor’easter.

Landgrove, Vermont, has seen the highest snow total so far and picked up a whopping 40 inches of snow.

Rowe, Massachusetts, picked up just under 3 feet of snow. Hawley in Massachusetts and Greenville in New Hampshire received 33 inches of snow from the storm.

Top wind gusts

High winds led to downed trees and power lines across the Northeast, with many areas seeing wind gusts over 50 mph.

The Mount Washington Observatory, which sits at 6,288 feet above sea level in New Hampshire, reported a wind gust of 66 mph.

The Massachusetts coast also experienced strong wind gusts, with a 63-mph gust reported in Rockport on the North Shore and a 60-mph gust recorded in Dennis on Cape Cod.
