Messy winter weather mix of snow, rain, ice snarls travel for millions along I-95 corridor Monday
As this first round of rain comes to an end, the FOX Forecast Center is continuing to monitor a few more storm systems that could impact early Christmas travel across the Northeast.
NEW YORK – Millions of people across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic faced a messy mixture of rain, snow and ice that slowed travel Monday as the final full workweek ahead of the busy Christmas holiday got underway.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, the latest round of precipitation was from the same storm system that produced an ice storm in portions of the Midwest over the weekend.
As the storm moved out of the Midwest, it brought winter weather to the higher elevations of the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
One video recorded in West Virginia showed a peaceful winter scene as snow fell from the sky in Martinsburg over the weekend.

A photo from The Plains, Virginia, showed snow coating sidewalks, grassy surfaces and some roads in the region.
And a video recorded in Pennsylvania showed snow falling from the sky in Duncansville on Sunday.
The storm then eventually moved into the Northeast later Sunday and into the overnight hours, impacting the Monday morning commute for millions of people.
Schools, too, were impacted, with several districts in New York and Connecticut announcing they were closed or had a delayed start due to the potentially dangerous travel conditions.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, the storm system encountered colder arctic air, which allowed the messy wintry mix to develop.
While it was mainly a heavy rain event along the busy Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to New York City, some slick spots were reported, which led to slower commute times Monday morning.
Winter Weather Advisories that stretched from Pennsylvania through portions of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island have since expired, but forecasters warn that conditions could still be slippery. They urged caution while traveling.
The storm is now pushing offshore into the Atlantic Ocean, allowing the winter weather to wind down. However, some rain is expected to continue along portions of the I-95 corridor.
