Storm system lingers across Northeast after producing flash flooding in Pennsylvania, West Virginia

The energy is part of the same deadly storm system that blasted the South with severe weather on Thursday, prompting numerous Tornado Warnings and Flash Flood Warnings.

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continue to move through the Northeast, after putting down copious amounts of rain in the Ohio Valley and Appalachians.

In terms of rainfall totals, the FOX Forecast Center isn’t expecting blockbuster accumulations in the Northeast and New England, with amounts only reaching less than an inch through Saturday.

"Heavy rainfall along with warm temperatures will cause rapid melting of snowpack from the foothills northward," the National Weather Service said. "This will increase the runoff into streams and rivers. Moderate to heavy rainfall over partially frozen ground will support the potential for flash flooding as well as river flooding."

DEADLY SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK SLAMS NEW ORLEANS WITH FLASH FLOODING, TORNADOES ACROSS SOUTH

Significant flash flooding around Pittsburgh on Friday

A widespread 2-4 inches of rainfall around the Pittsburgh metro on Thursday evening triggered flash flooding and even a Flash Flood Emergency to be issued by local National Weather Service meteorologists.

Several water and home rescues were reported in parts of southwestern Allegheny County and northern Washington County, where the water was expected to stream into already-high creeks and rivers.

The heavy rainfall could force some waterways out of their banks just a week after cresting at levels not seen in decades.

Early indications from NOAA water gauges indicate that major waterways like the Ohio River will stay below levels of recent crests.

The NWS in Pittsburgh reported the 2.77 inches received Thursday was its wettest April day on record, breaking the record set just nine days earlier at 2.68 inches. "This is the only time the 1st and 2nd greatest daily rainfall for a month have occurred in the same year," NWS Pittsburgh posted on X Friday morning.

Pittsburgh suburb residents on two streets in Bridgeville had to evacuate due to fast-flowing floodwater, as seen in footage from the Bridgeville Police Department.

"Baldwin Street and Maple Street being evacuated due to flooding. If you need somewhere to go, the fire department is available," the department said on Facebook Thursday evening.
