At least 2 dead as tornado-warned severe storms, large hail pummel central US

More than 400 reports of storm-related issues have been received by National Weather Service offices. The reports were made on Sunday, which marked the second-busiest severe weather day of 2025 so far. March 14 remains No. 1 with more than 600 reports.

INDIANAPOLIS – At least two people were killed Sunday after an outbreak of severe storms ripped through the Great Lakes and mid-South on Sunday. 

The powerful storms stretched from Lower Michigan down to eastern Texas and northern Louisiana, unleashing damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes

While a widespread destructive tornado outbreak did not materialize, the day was still incredibly busy, with 70 Tornado Warnings and an incredible 338 severe thunderstorm warnings issued, according to the FOX Forecast Center. The impacts of these storms were twofold, with damaging wind as the main issue north of the Ohio River and large hail to the south.

The National Weather Service in Louisville, Kentucky, confirmed EF-1 tornado damage (at least 90 mph winds) in the town of Fairdale following Sunday night's storms. A damage survey was ongoing Monday.

This comes as wind gusts topped 96 mph in Jackson, Michigan, and were just as strong in Hoopeston, Illinois, at 85 mph, with unconfirmed reports of a 106-mph gust nearby. An 81-mph gust was reported in Cascade Township, Michigan, and an 81-mph gust was reported in Valparaiso, Indiana.

A man was killed in Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon when his tractor-trailer encountered severe crosswinds and tipped over, according to Sgt. Benjamin McFalls with the Porter County Sheriff's Department. 

Another death was reported in Middlebury, Indiana, when thunderstorm winds blew over an Amish buggy at a highway intersection, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office told FOX Weather.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Of the 19 Flash Flood Warnings that were issued, two in Jackson County, Mississippi, were Flash Flood Emergencies. The emergency manager reported "significant flooding throughout Hurley. Videos from broadcast partners also show flooding of several inches covering one of the main highways as well as about a foot of water surrounding several homes."

Radar estimates showed up to a foot of rain fell in the area.

As of Monday morning, hundreds of thousands of customers across the nation were without power, and they were bracing for the possibility of additional thunderstorms.
