Coast Guard still searching for missing person day after boat capsized near Staten Island, New York

The Coast Guard says the search for the missing 52-year-old man is still in full force. Waters were roughly 38 degrees as of Monday afternoon.

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. – A desperate search is still underway Monday for a missing man after a boat capsized in the chilly waters near Staten Island, New York, killing three people and leaving two others injured.

Four of the five rescued were found unresponsive Sunday afternoon about 5 miles off the coast of Breezy Point, Queens, prompting a massive multi-agency rescue operation, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

In a Monday afternoon update, the Coast Guard said the search for the missing 52-year-old man was still in full force. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black boots. 

The Coast Guard said waters were roughly 38 degrees on Monday afternoon. 

Coast Guard Sector New York said it received a distress call relayed by New York City 911 operators shortly after noon, reporting a boat rapidly taking on water near the tip of the Rockaway peninsula.

Within minutes, a coordinated response was launched, deploying three rescue boats from Coast Guard Stations New York and Sandy Hook, along with an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City.

Two of the rescued individuals were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital, and the remaining three were transported to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook.

The Coast Guard said the boat was fishing recreationally and departed from Howard Beach, New York, on Sunday morning. 

Authorities have not yet released identifying information about the remaining victims.
