Plane slides off taxiway at Minneapolis airport as winter storm brings snow, ice to Upper Midwest

Winter Weather advisories remain in effect through at least Thursday morning across parts of western South Dakota, stretching through central and southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Winter Storm warnings are in effect for areas of Minnesota, including Duluth and Brainerd. Areas of northwestern Wisconsin are also under a Winter Storm Warning.

A strong winter storm that brought snow and ice to the Plains and Upper Midwest over the last few days has led to treacherous driving conditions and also caused an airplane to slide off the taxiway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

While snow, sleet and freezing rain from this storm system have fallen across the North, a multiday severe weather outbreak has led to numerous reports of tornadoes and flooding in parts of the South.

HOW DO WINTER STORMS FORM?

Tracking snowfall

Snowy conditions will continue across portions of the Upper Midwest as the storm system winds down and pulls away from the region.

Most areas seeing snow will only pick up an additional inch or two. Some areas could pick up another 3 to 5 inches by the time all is said and done.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation said that due to the heavy snow, strong winds and near-blizzard conditions, Interstate 90 was closed in both directions from Chamberlain to Sioux Falls.

Interstate 29 was also closed in both directions from the I-29/I-90 interchange in Sioux Falls to Brookings.

The SDDOT said plows were having difficulty clearing the roads due to near-zero visibility and accumulating snow. Some snowplows even became stuck due to the high snow accumulations on roads.

The SDDOT said I-29 was reopened from the I-29/I-90 interchange in Sioux Falls to Brookings as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, but I-90 remained closed. Cleanup efforts were expected to be completed sometime Wednesday morning.

Some areas picked up more than 2 feet of snow from this storm system, including Lake Andes in South Dakota, which picked up 27 inches of snow since Monday morning.

O'Neill in Nebraska picked up about 18 inches of snow, and Larchwood in Iowa picked up a foot.

The snow made for some difficult driving conditions in eastern Minnesota on Tuesday.

Videos posted to social media show covering roads across the region, which significantly impacted travel during the morning and evening commutes.

Drivers had been urged to take it slow on the roads, allow extra room between vehicles, and budget for extra driving time to make it to final destinations safely.
