Tropical development possible in Gulf of Mexico while Debby lashes US East Coast

While the U.S. East Coast is lashed by flooding rain and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Debby, there is also a chance for tropical development in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

All eyes are on Tropical Storm Debby as much of the U.S. East Coast is lashed by flooding rain and gusty winds.

Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane along Florida's Big Bend on Monday morning. The now-tropical storm has stalled off the Southeast coast and continues to dump a tremendous amount of rain across portions of the Carolinas.

However, there is also a tropical disturbance being tracked in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, which will be monitored for development once it reaches the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

For much of the week, this disturbance has been a cluster of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

The National Hurricane Center said the northern portion of this tropical disturbance should reach the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this weekend, but any development is expected to be slow to occur once it gets there.
