The United States Geological Survey says that this earthquake is not associated with a swarm of deep earthquakes near Pahala on Hawaii's south-central coast, which has been ongoing for a few years.
In the past century, there has been 63 earthquakes magnitude 5 or greater within 100 km of today's event, including 15 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or larger, the USGS stated Sunday evening.
