KEY WEST, Fla. – Florida residents staged the annual burning of hurricane warning flags on Tuesday to mark the end of the tropical weather season.
The season kicked off on June 1 and ended on the last day of November.
The Florida Keys were largely spared during the 2021 season, with just a couple of what meteorologists refer to as drive-by systems.
At the burning ceremony, Conch Republic administration members offered thanks that the islands were spared from significant impacts.
Before the hurricane warning flags were burned, islanders doused the symbols with rum, a Key West staple.

Residents of South Florida have been counting their blessings for the last several years.
The last time the area reported hurricane-force winds was during Irma in 2017.
Hurricane Irma impacted the Florida Keys as a category four storm with sustained winds over 130 mph and produced a storm surge of around 8 feet.
