Critical fire weather for parts of the central US Sunday

Dry air and strong wind gusts will fuel fire weather conditions from Nebraska to West Texas.

Critical fire weather will be present Sunday for the central and southern plains.

Dry air and strong wind gusts will fuel fire weather conditions from Nebraska to West Texas.

Fire Weather Alerts will be in place Sunday. A Fire Weather Warning is mostly for southeast Colorado and the easternmost parts of Kansas, while a Fire Weather Watch extends from north Texas to the western half of Oklahoma.

Because of the high fire danger, outdoor burning is not advised.

Strong winds will be present, further enhancing any fires that may start. Gusts upwards of 70 mph will be possible for those along the lower elevations late morning and into the afternoon hours. Places near higher elevations could see higher wind gusts.

Winds of this magnitude will create difficult driving conditions. The west winds will cause strong crosswinds on north-south-oriented roads posing hazards to high-profile lightweight vehicles. Blowing dust may reduce visibility to under a mile at times during the strongest winds, the National Weather Service says.
